On Friday March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake shook Japan and triggered a devastating tsunami that swept over the northern part of the country, killing hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people; several hundred more are missing. The largest the world has seen over the past century and the strongest Japan has ever experienced, the 8.9 magnitude quake led to tsunami warnings all throughout the coastal Pacific. As people of an island nation, the Japanese are among the most educated about earthquakes and tsunamis. This giant wave struck Japan between 15 and 30 minutes of the quake, rendering the people helpless, without much chance to evacuate.
