Did you ever wonder why certain food groups were recommended over others growing up? For example, the traditional USDA food pyramid recommends eating 6-11 servings/day of "bread, cereal, rice, and pasta," which in my opinion is not a healthy "base" of a pyramid. If I were to redesign the food pyramid I would place vegetables and fruits on the bottom instead of grains. Traditional cultures around the world did use grains, but they consumed WHOLE, fermented, or soaked grains which are much easier to digest. Today most grains are processed into flour devoid of many nutrients, which puts strain on the body to break it down (i.e. spiking insulin, GI upset, etc.)
Some grains are good for us (i.e quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, barley), and there is no doubt about that, but I do not believe that 6-11 servings a day of bread, pasta, cereal, and rice is good for our bodies. It's no surprise that so many people these days are sensitive (or allergic) to gluten containing products, or more generally foods containing wheat. If you look on the ingredient list of packaged foods, most contain wheat as a major ingredient.

Yes. I think it has to do with Big Agri, lobbying, advertising, money, etc.... i guess i'm a bit cynical.

Is beef really what's for dinner?

Natural Med, I recently read that cooking / processing food destroys the natural enzymes that help us digest it. Is this what you're talking about?

Hi Olive,
From the raw foodists I hear that cooking food destroys most of the natural enzymes. From the opposite end of the spectrum I hear that cooking food actually helps the body break it down. With all this conflicting information I recommend eating a combination of raw and cooked foods particularly vegetables. Personally, I like to steam most of my veggies these days and add a little salt and olive oil, and on the side eat a raw salad loaded with freshly shredded beets and carrots. Yum!

I became better aware of the need for BASIC awareness of nutrition while watching "Dr. Oz" yesterday... the show was about cholesterol. I was absolutely shocked about how little the general public understands about the food they're eating. Oz hosted a mock Family Fued and asked, "which foods contain the healthiest fats?" The family he asked responded with: "red peppers" (oops, no... sorry... try again), "broccoli" (sorry, try again...), "artichokes" (um.. no, try again), and finally, "olive oil" (yes- that is correct!) He then asked the next family what foods contain the most of a particular vitamin, and they said, "red peppers" (correct!), "broccoli" (correct), "artichokes" (ooh... sorry!) and finally "orange juice" (correct). What is wrong with this picture?

It is no wonder that as a nation we are more obese than ever, and for the first time in our history our children will not outlive their parents. Astounding!

When are we going to get smart? Can't we have legislation that outlaws fat and suger from our diet?

Does anybody have any ideas how to get the proper information to the public? We are dieing!
