Out of curiosity, I wanted to start a thread about this. Personally I didn't realize there even was a debate as to whether high cholesterol is really cause for alarm... so it was interesting to hear what Dr. Sinatra has said in his writing and videos on the subject. Obviously this is very controversial... what are people's thoughts?

Hi Sandy_I think Dr. Sinatra is right on. We are too concerned about our numbers in cholesterol. We need to have a certain amount of cholesterol to live. I never heard of anybody dieing from high cholesterol. We have to be concerned about plaque in our arteries, as the plaque clogs the arteries and might possibly cause a stroke or heart attack. I know people with extremely low cholesterol who have had a buildup of plaque that have caused them problems. Check your plaque! Take natural cures like COQ10 and Fish oils Omega 3's. Keep your blood pressure down and be happy!

Generic for Altocor (Lovastatin) is a cholesterol-lowering medication used to blocking the production of cholesterol in the body. Lovastatin reduces bad cholesterol namely low-density lipoprotein. It prevents heart attacks and strokes. It gives a better result.

What about the side effects from any Statiin drug?
headache
difficulty sleeping
flushing of the skin
muscle aches, tenderness, or weakness
drowsiness/ weakness
dizziness
nausea and/or vomiting
abdominal cramping and/or pain
bloating and/or gas
diarrhea
constipation
rash

Also, Myositis, which is inflammation of the muscles, can be a side effect of statins. The risk of muscle injury increases when certain other medications are coupled with statin use. For example, if you take a combination of a statin and a fibrate -- another cholesterol-reducing drug -- the risk of muscle damage increases greatly compared to someone who takes a statin alone.

Other dangers of statin drugs include other muscle conditions, which can be serious, there can be statin muscle pain. Known as myalgia, this pain can generally be resolved quickly by discontinuing the medication, which I would advise anybody to do that is taking Statin drugs.
