On my way home from work today, I was stopped by a girl with a clipboard in hand. I usually dread being approached like this because its usually involves getting pitched a cause (Save the Children, Greenpeace, ACLU - all great causes, of course) then getting asked to contribute money. Since this goes on where I live daily and I already contribute to one of these causes, I usually try to sneak by. Today, though, I'm happy I braved the inevitable solicitation...
The girl with the clipboard asked me how I felt about McDonalds advertising to children. Although it had never crossed my mind before, the link between using a clown to advertise to children and a product with such potential to lead to childhood obesity (ever see Fast Food Nation?) seemed outrageous in that moment. I imagine the manufacturers of Camel cigarettes, years back, had to stop advertising cancer sticks to children with a cartoon camel named Joe Cool for similar reasons. Turns out, Corporate Accountability International will be handing the petition I signed to Mickey D's corporate one of these days. If anyone's interested, go to retireronald.org. |
